THE MEDAL OF THE HOLY FACE OF JESUS

The medal of the Holy Face of Jesus was requested by Our Blessed Mother to Sr. Maria Pierina De Micheli in March 1938. It was requested as a "weapon of defense, a shield of courage, a guarantee of love and of mercy in these times of sexuality and hatred towards God and the Church."
In its complete design the engraved medal provides a twofold communication, one on its obverse or prominent side, another on its reverse. Considering the former we see depicted the Face of Jesus (reconstructed from the Holy Shroud) bearing the inscription "illumina Domine Vultum Tuum super nos" (may the light of your Face, O Lord, shine upon us). It captures and expresses in a remarkable way the meaning of the sacrifice of the cross by which He accomplished redemption.
On the reverse side of the - medal is a host surrounded by rays with the following words: Mane nobiscum Domine" (Stay with us, O Lord). It signifies our present sacrifice of the Mass, or the Holy Eucharist, our greatest act of worship. Jesus remains with us in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist and He is present at all times in the Tabernacle wafting for a visit from us to keep Him company. All those who shall wear this medal and make a visit to the Blessed Sacrament every Tuesday, if they can, they will have a happy death under the loving gaze of my Divine Son, was a promise that Sr. Maria Pierina received from the Blessed Mother.
The medal was made in all its details under the supervision of Sister Maria Pierina in 1940.

PRAYERS IN HONOR
TO THE HOLY FACE OF JESUS
- Lord Jesus Christ, whose Holy Face hidden in Your Passion, shines like the sun in its splendor, grant us, who unite ourselves on earth to Your sufferings, to rejoice in heaven in the revelation of Your glory. Amen. (From the Mass of the Holy Face).
- O Lord Jesus, who by a singular prodigy did leave for us upon the Holy Shroud the imprint of Your most Holy Body, so cruelly tortured and put to death for our salvation, together with the Image of Your most Holy Face, that wicked men by wounds and blows disfigured, grant us through the merits of Your many sufferings, that by venerating on earth the image of Your Holy Face, upon which the very Angels long to gaze, we may be made worthy to contemplate it forever in heaven. Amen.
- O Jesus, who in Thy bitter Passion didst become 'the Reproach of men and the Man of Sorrows,' I contemplate Thy Divine Face whereon there once did shine the beauty and sweetness of the Godhead; but now It has become as it were the face of a leper! Nevertheless under those disfigured features, I recognize Thine infinite love and I am consumed with desire to love Thee and make Thee loved by all men. The tears which well up so abundantly in Thy Sacred Eyes appear to me as so many precious pearls that I love to gather up, in order to purchase the souls of poor sinners by means of their infinite value. O Jesus whose adorable Face ravishes my heart, I implore Thee to fix deep within me Thy Divine Image and to set me on fire with Thy Divine Love, so that I may be found worthy to come to the contemplation of Thy Most Glorious Face in heaven. Amen. (Prayer by St. Therese of the Child Jesus)
